Slit-collimated SAXSess MC2, Anton Paar ** Wiesner’s lab, the Shared Materials Instrumentation Facility (SMIF) at Duke University operates as an interdisciplinary shared use facility that includes Atomic force microscopes, scanning and transmission electron microscopes, x-ray diffractometry, x-ray photoelectron spectrometry, vertical scanning interferometry, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy, as well as complete facilities for sample preparation and manipulation (e.g. Instrumentation for nanometer-scale characterization includes a zetasizer/ ZetaPALS instrument and multi purpose titrator for performing photon correlation spectroscopy and measuring electrophoertic mobility of nano-scale particles, and a BET surface area and pore size analyzer (Beckman Coulter SA3100). A Cytovia (AETOS Technologies, Inc., Auborn, AL) attachment to a conventional optical microscope allows for visual inspection of phenomena with sub-100 nm resolution and a Kruss Instruments drop goniometer for quantifying surface tensions (and thus hydrophobicity) are both equipped with video cameras that is capable of capturing still images and movies. Approximately 1200 sq feet of laboratory space is fully equipped for the fabrication, characterization, modification and evaluation of membranes, nanomaterials, and surface phenomena. Wiesner’s laboratories at Duke University are well equipped for research in the areas of membrane science, water treatment, organic and inorganic pollutant analysis, colloid and nano-particle characterization, and water chemistry.
